Our Cows

There are no shortcuts with our beef.

An animal takes better than two years to get here, and almost all of that time is spent doing nothing more complicated than relaxing in a field and eating grass.

The Angus Breed

Angus is the breed most people think of when they think of a good steak, and there is a reason for that. It marbles well, it finishes well, and smells amazing when put to heat. ...We do not mix breeds and we do not sell anything we did not raise, so every cut that leaves the farm is guaranteed fresh and delicious. No animal goes to the butcher older than 30 months.

What They Eat

Our cows eat grass most of the year, and then hay through the winter. But for the final 90 days we finish on corn and nutritional supplements, and that is what builds the marbling. It is the difference between beef that is merely lean and beef that is worth your freezer space. If you would rather have it completely grass fed, we can do that too.

Pasture Raised in Hume, Virginia

Our cows spend their lives on pasture in Fauquier County, in the hills around Hume, Virginia. Thumb Run runs through this country, and the farm takes its name from it.

FAQs

All Angus. Angus is the breed most people associate with well marbled beef.

They are raised on pasture and finished on corn and nutritional supplements for the last 90 days, which is what gives the beef its marbling. Completely grass fed is also available at no extra cost. Just ask when you place your order. While we are getting started it does not add to your wait. Once we are running on a regular schedule, grass fed orders will need extra lead time, so we will confirm your timing with you when you order.

No added hormones, and no antibiotics in any beef we sell. Our cattle receive their normal vaccines and healthy feed, and nothing more. On the rare occasion an animal does need antibiotics to get well, it comes out of the program and is never sold.

Every animal is 30 months or younger, which is the standard for butcher shops and grocery stores.

Every animal is Angus, raised on pasture in Fauquier County, and harvested at 30 months or younger. The beef we sell comes from cattle that receive no hormones and no antibiotics, just their normal vaccines and healthy feed. They are finished on corn and nutritional supplements over the final 90 days, which is what builds the marbling.
